Prospect Rankings History of the UFHL The vision for the UFHL started in the basement of a Mississauga, Ontario house in the winter of 1999. Keith Fernandes wanted to create his own fantasy hockey league. He wanted to create something unique, something fresh and something that was far superior to the rest of the fantasy hockey leagues on the net. Keith decided to team up his good friend Dave and build an Ultimate Fantasy Hockey League.Dave chose to be the Montreal Canadiens general manager and Keith, the Toronto Maple Leafs manager. Dave and Keith have moved on, but the league they started has continued. The first general manager hired was Don Tran (current New York Rangers GM). Soon, all the vacant general managers spots were filled. All that was left for the first actual points to be awarded. The first ever UFHL season (1999-2000) began after the 2000 NHL All-Star game in Toronto. Our first season wasn't with out its share of problems but we tried out best to learn from our mistakes. The regular season concluded with the Detriot Red Wings being crowned as UFHL regular season champs. The time came for the first playoffs in UFHL history. After much deliberation it was decided that the UFHL playoffs would be a second season. It was agreed that the regular season would be the ULTIMATE goal of all general managers. The playoffs would be an added bonus that would have no bearing on the regular season. The first playoffs of the league were extremely exhilarating and thrilling for all those involved. Series were clinched on the last day and many general managers had to use every bit of their hockey knowledge in order to gain the upper-hand. In the end, New York Rangers' general manager Don was victorious. The first full UFHL hockey season had come and gone. The offseason was tumultous to say the least. The turnover of general managers was great (particulary to a select few teams who seemed to never have a stable general managers). The offseason saw the UFHL change its website many times in order to offer an easily accessible site for all its general managers. The site started to suffer as many ideas were tried out (unsuccessfully.) Then things took a turn for the worse, when co-commish (at the time) Dave had to relinquish his posistion in order to pursue other ventures. The future of the UFHL was up in the air for a while. Ideas of merging with other fantasy leagues was considered as it was evident that Keith couldn't handle it all by himself. Finally a breakthrough! Ben (current Philadelphia GM) and Rick (current Toronto GM) were kind enough to offer their assistance. Ben even went to the length of offering space on his website Leafs29.com (check it out!) to provide the forum for the UFHL. A new partnership was founded and it seemed a re-birth of the UFHL. Ben, Rick and Keith worked feverishly on the new site and devloped a new point system as well. Finally, perfection was achieved. The new UFHL website was constructed so we could better serve you, the greatest general managers in the world. Thus, it was the beginning of a new chapter in the story of the UFHL. The second season started. The following season saw the UFHL continue to grow. Rick and Ben took larger roles in the UFHL, and the site went throught many structural and visual changes. Rule were altered, new GMs were hired, all in the name of progress. Don won the UFHL regular season title. The third UFHL season got underway in 2001-2002. Dramatic changes had taken place since the last season. Keith had stepped down from the Executive Board, and Rick and Ben were happy to have Rob and Jay join the team. Mid season the UFHL contracted to 27 teams in an effort to find stability. Many GMs transferred their teams to new cities (retaining their own players but changing franchises). In February 2002, the UFHL got yet another make over. The rules are still being tweaked, and the League Executives are still always on the look out for a strong GM to add to the league. Through all the changes, the league continues toget closer to reaching its claim of being the Ultimate Fantasy Hockey League.
